Green Energy Collaboration in the Northwest

Renewable Energy Composite Solutions (RECS), a Vancouver, Washington based company, is poised to start commercial production of the Skyron Systems SSi-5m3 vertical axis wind turbine in February 2010. RECS will draw on the extensive resources of its sister company Christensen Shipyards, a world renowned composite luxury yacht builder.

A $1 million federal stimulus grant that was awarded to RECS in October 2009 by the Washington State Department of Commerce will help the company retool and retrain its workforce for the project. Once in full production, the project is expected to create approximately 200 green energy jobs, helping a region that has been hit hard by the economic downturn.

The SSi5m3 turbines’ composite blades are fabricated using the vacuum infusion process and assembled into a steel superstructure. This multi-solution, vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) targets a variety of field applications involving onsite generation solutions for urban and remote sites. In addition to the benefits offered by other turbine technologies, SKYRON’s product is designed to:

  • provide a cost-efficient alternative energy source;
  • provide customers and utilities the benefits of on-site generation;
  • provide another means for remote power generation and water pumping to remote and developing regions;
  • address specific commercial applications such as dewatering natural gas wells; and
  • enable the utilization of a turbine product in close-quarter urban applications.
